ZDP4 the new white meat

Wed Aug 21, 2013 5:03 pm

Here is a new steel to me and I've sold and tried a bunch of stuff. ZDP4 is a a cousin of ZDP189 that is a stainless steel with outstanding wear resistance and edge holding ability. Hitachi developed this steel for high quality knife makers as well as other industries that wanted something that could perform as well or better than the best carbon steels but with full stainless characteristics.
The main difference of between the element content of ZDP4 and ZDP189 is as follows.

ZDP189: C 3.0, Cr 20.0, W 0.5, Mo 1.3, V 0.1, Co 0

ZDP4: C 2.7, Cr 16.5, W 0, Mo 2.0, V 3.2, Co 2.0

The addition of MO & V and Co makes this steel a even more wear resistant than ZDP189 while still having plenty of Chromium for stainless protection. No tungston in the ZDP4 while there is a little in ZDP189.

We're picking up a line of Japanese single bevel knives with this steel and I'm trying to get them to do some gyutos with it as well. The name of the blacksmith is Sukenari and we should have them in a couple months.

Sounds very interesting, what's the price point going to be? hopefully not as high as zdp-189

Hitachi Steel Co is the swagg. I love the fact that they still produce Tamahagane from traditional clay Tatara forges on the property a couple times a year and distribute to local sword smiths. There you go Mark, how bout a special run of Hitachi Tamahagane Gyutos. lol

I've been asking around for Tamahagane but they reserve it for swords so it's hard to get. If I have a chance I'll get some.

They'll be expensive but not as much as some of the ZDP189 knives we've sold. About $600 for the 240 yanagiba and up from there.

Not sure about the gyutos or even if they'll do them.

Mark, that would be i-n-c-r-e-d-i-b-l-e. We'll be pulling for you.

I have a friend who's a well known bladesmith (Tim Zowada) and he's actually smelted his own tamahagane using iron sand from the shores of the Great Lakes.

Sorry, bit of a rabbit trail there. The ZDP 4 sounds boss. Significantly more Vanadium.

They are functional works of art indeed. Heading back up to Northern MI this week for some R&R so I'll need to catch up with him when I get there.
