Which stropping compounds?

Thu Sep 12, 2013 1:46 pm

Hi:
I'm going to get the magnet backed 3"x8" horse but stop to use naked for daily maintenance but need advise on what compounds to get to use on balsa and bovine leather strops.

I plan a universal stone holder to use with a 140 flattening plate.

I use the Edge Pro Apex for sharpening.
My usual progression is something like this:
For stainless: Shapton GS 1k, Pro 2k, GS 4k, GS 8K.
For carbon: Nubatama Ume 1k, Green Brick 2k or Ume 2K, Bamboo 5K.

The object is to finish on the balsa or bovine leather.

So do I get the 1 micron Boron Carbide Paste, one of the diamond sprays or wait for the .5 micron Chromium Oxide paste?

Thanks,
Rick

Hi Rick,

If I'm stropping with several substrates I usually would do something like this.

Balsa: 1 micron
Leather: .5 micron
Horse: nothing

I would use them in this order. The idea is the balsa is more fibrous so you put the 1 micron on that. The leather is smoother so you go finer. The horse is hard and doesn't need compound so use that as your final strop.

If you wanted to use paste same general principal.

Hi:
Do the sprays have any advantage over the paste or vise versa?
