whats your sharpening progression?

Mon Mar 31, 2014 1:24 am

i usually touch up my knives regularly on a 5000 grit stone

but full sharpening starts at 450 then 1000, 2000,5000 and finish on newspaper (only because i haven't purchased strops yet)

how about you guys?

Depends on what is needed. 99% of the time I can fix most edge issues with a 1k then finish between 2k and 6k. If I need to repair a chipped edge I have a few very coarse stone (60-220 grit) or a belt grinder to fix major damage. Recently it's been a Shapton pro 1k and Naniwa 2k green brick for most of my sharpening needs.

Naniwa 450 if needed, Shapton GS 1000, Naniwa 2k Green Brick, Shapton GS 4k then 8k if I'm feeling it. Strop on a balsa with .5 micron diamond spray after use...

Green Brick works for most stops.

When I sharpen for others, or when I do my beater or utility knives, I use this. micrograph-bamboo-150-latte-green-brick-progression-t5932.html
On my better knives, I am currently playing with finishing with the yaginoshima asagi. Sometimes for kicks I'll finish with the Snow White. I am finding though, with knives I use a lot, less is more.

If I'm doing a touch up 3k-6k, strop on cardboard then newspaper. Full meal deal = 1k, 3k-6k, strop. Edge repair = 250, 400, 1k, etc.

Chosera 400-1000-5000. Edge trailing strokes on the 5000. I've been threatening to get an 8000 grit stone but I really don't see the need at this point.

1k,5k it's all I got for now. Also have a 140 atoma for cutting too much metal and flattening.

Chosera 400, 800, 2000 and 5000. Never use the full progression. 5k for stropping and deburring only. The 2k is my most used one. Split leather in between, plain leather afterwards, basically for fun.
