If you were going to buy a hone or hones for someone being deployed to combat, what would you get him and why? Remember he will have to carry it in his backpack, which already weighs 200lbs.

DMT offers some smaller diamond hones/plates that look portable and robust. Are you talking for field combat knives?

Yes, tactical/combat knives. I'm not buying. My family doesn't have anyone in the service right now. My cousins are all out of the service and our kids are just now starting to graduate high school. It's really a hypothetical question. I was thinking about it last night at work.

+1 Ken! Any flat surface is thus your stone.
Also, DMT coarse and fine stones both have an NSN and should be available through supply.

Please.....I can see a soldier stopping to look for a flat rock to sharpen his knife with diamond films!

Gerber makes a pen sized diamond rod that pushes out like a lipstick container. One side is flat and the other is rounded in case any tactical knives have serrated portions.
