We have a massive amount of Edge Pro products so we figured it would be good to have a whole section on how to use the machine and what to use on it.

What to flatten 150 grit nubatama with?

Wed Sep 18, 2013 4:19 pm

Hi!

I have been using my Edge Pro kit a few times now, I managed to mess up one of the courser stones(Nubatama 150 grit bamboo, bought that separately), and have to flatten it before I can use it again...
What do you recommend me to get to flatten it with? I see you have a dmt stone that fits on the edge pro, would this be as good to lay the bevel with as the nubatama?

Also, the highest grit I have are the Shapton 4k, would an Shapton 8k stone be sufficient to get a mirror polish if I go through the stones from the "essential set" kit and finish with a 8k stone?

Thanks!

Regards/Johan

Hi Johan,

Low grit sandpaper is the way to go. It's cheap. The 60 grit wet dry stuff should work for that stone.

For mirror polish you need a tight progression. Adding the 8000 will get you pretty good results. It's a slippery slope and you will get incremental improvement the more stones you use. Also, focus on using the same direction so the scratches line up and don't crisscross and that will improve your finish.

Per Shapton:
"One should never use sandpaper to flatten a sharpening stone! Grit from the sandpaper will stick to and clog up the surface of the sharpening stone. This prevents the stone's grit from cutting the steel, and the blades just lightly slide over the surface of the stone without being sharpened."
Of course the Shapton flattening systems cost an arm and a leg.
YMMV WRT the Nubatamas.

I have found that the 8K doesn't quite give a mirror finish.

Cheers,

Rick

I find that my DMT XXC plate works fine to flatten my Bamboo 150, full size and EP size both get great results.

Atoma 140 or 2nd choice DMT XXC. I use the Atoma 140 all the time when flattening these stones.
