what is the pointer with bolter. ?

Bolsters make it difficult to sharpen near the bolster. Why have bolster.

They're a remnant of the forging process. I've heard a few explanations for why they aren't ground off: they're to balance the knife, or to prevent slipping, or support your grip. I personally feel like German makers keep them on not because they have a purpose but because they're traditional.

I've heard people refer to them as finger guards. If ruffians attempt to take your fingers hostage, the bolster will be there to protect you.
