What happened to the 2 micron HA SiC?

Tue Sep 18, 2012 3:30 pm

I have the HA 1 micron BC and love it for quick touch ups. I woud like to touch up with a lower grit before switching to stones.

I haven't seen it on the site for months. I also haven't seen any equivalents on sale like the 4 micron CBN.

Is there a reason why? Is it because it's better to switch to stones beyond 1 micron?

Keith discontinued it over a year ago. He has his hands full trying to produce enough stuff for us currently so I don't imagine he's going to bring it back.

Most people use the higher grit stropping compounds. I typically will sharpen up to about 8K and then strop to finish with 1 micron boron carbide on either balsa or leather.

In that case, glad I still have a bottle. Too bad really, I liked it.

2µCBN or 1.5µ CBN is great too.

Thanks for the quick replies. Too bad about the SiC, I seemed like exactly what I wanted.

Is there any reason why there isn't any 2 or 4 micron CBN? Seems like a weird progression, 0.125, 0.25, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 15 to 30 microns.

Would the 1.5 micron CBN be that much different from the 1 micron BC for me to try using as a lower grit strop?

Also, what do you think of the 0.5 micron CBN or Chromium Oxide? Is it worth getting as a followup to BC? Would you recommend Balsa or Bovine or Horse Leather with it?

Sorry for all the questions. I'm just starting to strop and really like it. I find it much easier than stones.

2µ CBN and 4µ exists. It's standing in front of me as I type. Contact Ken directly. He may have them around.
0.5CBN and CrO leave very different finishes. The CBN is a bit toothier and ideal for kitchen knives. i like the CrO more for woodcarving and shaving.

Wether or not it's worth it, is up to you. i like it, but use BC as my go-to touch up compound along with 4µCBN. Doesn't matter what substrate you use. It works on everything I tried. Just a matter of feedback preference.

So my 4µ CBN gell is a collectors item too? :D

Well Mike, I can bring back 4 microns (vs 4.5) just for you, but first issue 4 microns is a collector's item :)

Actually the suspension (gel) is available at 4.5 microns and above and at 4.5 microns and below is a (deionized) water based slurry. 4.5 is available in both slurry and suspension. The suspension is used to keep the particles in suspension (almost by definition). Smaller particles manage to stay suspended long enough to be sprayed and stay uniform. FWIW some suspensions 'break' into their components and don't hold the compounds properly. My suspensions STAY suspended. I also have CBN in a paste formulation for use on leather belts in selected grits. And Aluminum oxide too, currently in 1 micron 0.3 microns and 0.050 microns in a water soluble emulsion.

How come you are missing the 2µ mix - one of the most popular.....????
