I bought the Shapton Glass set with the 1k, 4k, holder, etc. a couple months ago. Love the 1k stone but after doing several rounds sharpening with the whole set I'm finding I don't really like the feel and feedback of the 4k. I don't have a problem getting a nice edge with the 4k, just looking for something with a different feel. Anyone using a stone other than the Shapton 4k after the 1k that they like? Any general recommendations for 4-6k stone?

Thanks

I like both the green brick and sue hiro rika after my shapton 1K.

Shapton does the cuttin nice and quickly while the green brick is just left to polish and refine the edge.

Thank Lunatic, the green brick is listed as a 2k stone though, seems a little low to me as I'm looking to jump from 1k to 4, 5, or 6k. I've seen in some reviews that it can behave more like a 5k stone though. Can anyone confirm this from experience? The Suehiro Rika is on my preliminary list of stones so I'll take your recommendation on that into account.

Maybe I should also go ahead and say that my overall sharpening routine will soon be:

1k Shapton Glass I currently have
To be determined 4, 5, or 6k stone
8k stone (most likely the snow white)
1 micron balsa strop
Bare horse butt strop

Rika would be a good stone. It's been my go to in that range for years now. It's got great feedback and leaves a very nice finish.

A 2k (although I've never tried the Green Brick of Homie Love) would still be a very sharp edge.

Of course now that I've started doing research about this I'm feeling like I should get both the Green Brick and the Suehiro Rika!

Seems like pretty soon all my money will go towards stones/knives...

The 2k is a very versatile stone. You can stop there for your soft stainless. You can start there if your edge is in good shape but just starting to lose it. If you set a bevel with a 400-500 you can skip the 1k to help save that stone. Sometimes it's good for a quicky one stone sharpening. Lots of ways to work it into your line up so don't feel like your wasting money. Just remember, the more stones the merrier.

Yeah Jeff B you pretty much nailed what I was thinking with picking up both the Green Brick and the Suehiro Rika.

Would a jump from the Green Brick to the Snow White 8k be too much? Planning to only strop on the Snow White.

That would work. There is a set that has the 400 Latte - 2k Brick - 8k Snow White. The Mr. KnifeFanatic set. http://www.chefknivestogo.com/mrfa3stcoset.html
