I got the Veho USB microscope and I decided to take a look at an edge or two. Man, that does take some work at high magnification to get the focus and reflections right for a photo!

I'm trying to determine if I'm getting the burr removed correctly. I took a Gassan Nakiri and a Santoku directly OOTB and sharpened them on my Rika 5K stone. These photos are right off the 5K, no cork or strop deburring. I'm not sure what to look for on determining if the edges look good - I think they do, but I'd like some feedback please :-).

I plan on stropping on leather and checking the edge again to see the effect.

This is about 350-400 power magnification.

I definitely don't have the experience that most of the fantastic knife sharpeners on this site do. But as far as I can tell the edges look great and consistent for a 5k stone.

Steve, you're right - it's a lot of work to get good high magnification pictures but...

You're hard work has paid off. These are excellent pictures of excellent work. I really don't have anything negative to say about your photographic or sharpening technique. Clean and consistent bevels! The edge shows a single clean scratch pattern.

Kudos to you and my compliments!

Ken

Ken, I am humbled by such kind comments from a true master of sharpening. Thanks :-).

My main goal with this exercise is to try and minimize burr formation and to make sure I'm abrading away any burr so the edge is clean coming off a given stone. Up next is checking some of my knives as is under magnification, then viewing the effect of stropping the Gassans on a couple different mediums. I want to see if I'm degrading the edge at all during stropping and to improve/refine my technique via visual feedback.

Which veho do you have? Looks like your only set on 20x. You have to turn the dial all the way to get into the 400x range.

Sadden - I've got the one Mark sells. It's set on the high range. 20x looks very different. It took me a while to figure out how to switch ranges and fine tune the focus. I guess it won't focus in between the 20x and 400x settings, it just goes way out of focus. Is that your experience?

Yeah its 20x or 400x , theres no in between. If that is 400x then that knife must have bevels the size of a straight razors.

It took me awhile to get 400x figured out. Lighting lighting lighting.

The first picture shows a solid burr that's fairly equal on each side causing it to align center of the apex. It's that shiny roundish thing hanging on the apex.

In picture two the burr is directional and facing the camera.

Picture 3 shows minimal burr ( the foil like objects near the apex) formation and with a few more passes would be a perfect edge.

Picture 4 is same as picture 3.

Looks good Steve! Does the edge have bite? Or does it slide...
