Hi, I have from years ago being into straight razors have acquired the following: a Norton 4k/8k, DMT 325 and DMT 1200, a Belgian yellow coticule and a Belgian blue coticule. I am just starting to sharpen my straight's and have just gotten into knives.
What I would like some help with is what stones am I missing to sharpen both straights and knives? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Any other info needed just ask.
Thanks,
Mark

If you can sharpen straights, sharpening knives will be easy.

All I use on my knives is the Coticule and the BBW...and I sharpen them using the exact same method.
Edge leading on the stone(honing)/Edge trailing on the strop...but I use a solid strop for knives.

I find I don't need anything higher grit than the Coticule and the Strop to get the knives screaming sharp.

A straight is a whole different issue tho...cause you're using it on your skin, on your face,
so gradual steps are really important. But then again, people sharpened straights for a long time with
just the Coticule as well? (notwithstanding the lower grits)

The only thing I see missing is maybe the super fine stone(Japanese natural)...and/or the strops/CrOx paste.

I found sharpening straights really challenging. So much so, that I went back to Bics.. :?

I could never get them sharp enough, to be really comfortable...and I was continually nicking myself, etc.

Thanks for the reply desol. I only just started sharpening some razors, so I'm not that good at it yet! I do have a starter strop from when I started, but it's nicked up from learning. I might look at a jnat and the strops/CrOx paste.

Forgot to mention Ken's poly-diamond sprays....they're excellent for razors.

I've seen some pretty amazing scope shots of edges done progressively up to .025 micron.....they were literally like glass.

I've also seen a guy shave straight off of using CrOx on a BBW...so I guess whatever works.

Lots to learn there tho...
