I have a quesiton about stone progession: I know that as we sharpen and refine the edge it is proper to jump in grit by doubling the grit size.

So a jump from a 1k to a 2k is good and from a 4k to an 8k is good.

My question is this: If I just finished with my 4K stone, is it detrimental to the process to use a 5k and 6k stone before using the 8k?
Unnecessary I realize but is it a bad thing, why not use them?

The only bad to using more stones than is necessary is potentially screwing up......more steps, more chances to roll the edge, gouge the stone, etc.

Otherwise, no, there is no bad side to using more stones if your technique is perfect. :)

Adam, thank you.
I had a feeling that it was something along those lines, I could undo all the work done on the 4K stone by introducing the 5K and 6k instead of just heading straight to the 8K.

However, being obsessed with stones and having more than I actually need usually means I'm going to use them and pay for the consequences, if any.
