I'm currently in the research and fundraising stage for my next big knife purchase. The goko and new Richmond laser AS are really standing out. I'm a line cook and I use my Tojiro DP 240mm gyuto for pretty much everything, but have a masahiro carbon as well that I enjoy.

I know the steels are different, but they are both at the max of my price range and from the reviews seem like great knives, and i love the looks on both too! Both have carbon steel cores with great steel and stainless cladding for when I get busy or those folks at work I just can't trust decide to use it....

Does the goko patina along the edge like the AS? What are the main differences in hitachi white #1 and AS?

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreicated!

AS should hold an edge a bit longer than the White steel in the Goko. The Goko may take a slightly finer edge, but that is debateable and may not be seen until you are in the higher grits, like 10K+ or with finisher J Nats. Both should patina at the edge. The Goko is more rustic looking where the AOS Laser is more finished. I think either would be a good choice!

Having not seen the Laser AS, I'm going to make an assumption that it's got similar geometry to the other Laser's.

If that assumption is correct, the Goko will not be as thin. It will not be as refined either...which is not a bad thing, it's just different. The handle on the Goko is also not as nice as I believe the handle on the Laser AS appears to be.

Both will patina at their exposed cores.

White #1 to AS is awful small potato's. Pick based on other factors. But, AS does hold an edge slightly better and White does take a keener edge. As Taz said, though, you have to be a great sharpener with high grit stones to even notice the better edge aspect.

Man, I keep waiting for a review of the new RIchmond AS laser...
The 240s already sold out and no one is writing reviews about them...

Mr. Knife Fanatic just posted a great review on youtube. I'm sure it will make its way onto here very soon. In the meantime...

No problem.

I know what you mean... after I watched that video I was sold and went to click the buy button on the 240 only to find that they were sold out.

Mark, please tell me you have more of these bad boys coming in shortly...

The Goko appears to be thinner, at least at the base 3.01 vs. 3.48, than the Richmond...

I ordered a bunch more. It amazes me that these sit on the shelf and no one even sniffs at them but as soon as we do a demo video they fly off the shelf.
