Hey Mark & Susan !

Got the monkey on my back ... need another one of your knifes. This time I'm looking for some advice first.

Here's what I have now:

RICHMOND ARTIFEX
HIROMOTO GYUTO 240
HIROMOTO UTILITY 150

This time, I'm looking for something smaller... it should be thin and have very good edge retention. Also, I'm a sharpness freak and prone to Aogami Super (blue 2).

I'm planning on buying one from the list below... here's what I'm looking at on your web:

DOJO HAYASHI PETTY 135
RICHMOND ARTIFEX 80
KIKUICHI PERFORMANCE TKC PETTY 120
KONOSUKE HD 120 PETTY
MORITAKA PETTY 130
SAKAI TAKAYUKI DAMASCUS PETTY 120
TETSUHIRO PETTY 120

Also, I need a recommendation on which rod is best:

BOROSILLICATE ROD
IDAHONE CERAMIC ROD
MAC BLACK CERAMIC ROD

At your convenience...

Thanks, Bob

I have some of the 80mm Artifex petty's and the handles may be a bit small for you. The Dojo 135mm has a nice, large handle on it, which I like. I haven't used the blade yet, but it is Blue steel for the core, so I know it will take and hold a nice edge. Aogami Super and Blue #2 are different steels btw.

My Idahone just arrived yesterday, so I will try it out on the Artifex and see how it does!

Yeah, Blue #2 is not Aogami Super....two different steels.

Of your list, and with what you already have, I would exclude all of the 120mm petty's....to similar to a 150mm petty.

And the Artifex 80mm is a nice little knife. AEB-L takes a great edge and I like stainless in my paring knives.

Get the Artifex with a steel you have never tried. I have 5 different ones on the site.

I like the Mac rod.

Watercrawl..."Blue #2 is not Aogami Super....two different steels" ... right on, thanks for the clarification !
I looked up a metallurgy spec from Zknives showing a comparison of Aogami blue 1 , Aogami blue 2, Aogami Super.

Mark... "get the Artifex with a steel you have never tried" ... appreciate the recommendation. In taking a closer look at the Artifex Paring Knifes I suspect they may be a bit too small (I have big mits). However, of the 5 different steels being offered I'm curious which paring knife takes the sharpest edge and holds it the longest? How long are the handles? And, do they all have the same blade thickness? I'll put the MAC rod in the cart.

I really like the (drop point) blade shape on the Dojo Hayashi Petty, it's reminds me of a mini gyuto, but too long at 135mm.

Any other suggestions, maybe something I overlooked... anyone?

Thanks, Bob
