Hey, I haven't tried one of these but a customer of mine from Australia sent me a picture of some of the really cool rods he makes. I may get one and try it out. He says he tempers them at a very high hardness. I thought I would plug him since he's been a good customer of mine. His business and name is T Van Kempen.

The steels are made from D2 and are hand finished. The steels have been hardened, Ideal for for extra hard hunting knives and Japanese kitchen knives that have a high amount of hardness, as well as everyday knives . These steels are highly sort after in the meat industry as well as for every day domestic use.

The steels I make and sell are close to a smooth finish but it is not a polish steel. My steels are hand finished which means they are line and then rubbed back by hand so they are smooth. This gives the effect of a well worn in steel which is highly desired in the meat industry. I have worked in the industry for many years and and if you ask people that have also been in the industry for a while they will tell you the same. These steels are a pleasure to use however i will say that knowing how to both sharpen and maintain a knife would be an advantage before considering one of my steels. Hope this has helped answer a few questions.

Why are they bulbous? Why not a straight steel?

They are a reproduction of a very old English steel .Williams. Smithfeild. London. Also known as a Pipe steel, Very sought after in the meat industry. But the most popular ones are the straight ones. The pipes are popular amongst the people that know or have heard about them through stories past down through the years. Original pipes command prices in the range of between 4 and 6 maybe 700 dollars on auction sites.

Well, I think the fact that few, if any, people who forge knives are forging honing rods is criminal. So good idea!
