My Tanaka Sekiso yanagiba has two smaller kanji above (toward the tip) the main inscription, which do not appear in photos of the comparable kasumi knives.

Can someone tell me what those two characters say?

I dont's have one of his knives with those kanji and couldn't find a clear picture of those kanji, but I think it says "名匠," Master Craftsman.

So, is it reasonable to presume that Tanaka Shigeki himself forged my knife, or doesn't it work that way in Japan?

Perhaps it is an older knife forged by Mr. Kazuyuki Tanaka

Was the father a Master Craftsman, and the son is not?

That certainly makes sense, and fits with the hypothesis that I have an older knife, which makes me grin.
