Is the Extra Extra Coarse DMT worth getting if you already have the Extra Coarse?

Atoma 140 is not an option for me. The DMT plates are available right here at Lee Valley.

LV now carries the Atoma plates, cool.
I think the Atoma 400 would be great for lapping.

I use as follows...

Atoma 8x3, 140# = lapping all stones up to & including 5k

Atoma 8x3, 1200# = lapping all stones above 5k

:)

The XXC is a lot coarser than the XC.

Yes I know Bob, I think it will be a pretty handy item to have though, not just for lapping.

BTW I picked up the SPS II 13K stone yesterday, it is quite something. It leaves a perfect mirror finish, to the naked eye anyway and it has a great feel to it.

I have all the stones I need now for a bit so the Atoma plates are next.

If you have a full sized Atoma 140 then you probably don't need the XXC. However, if you're lapping EP stones then the full sized DMT XXC is a great choice for around 1/2 the price of the Atoma.

I will have to try that SP stone. I've got a Sigma Power 1k and it's very nice.

I just picked up the Atoma 140 (full size) so I'm not bothering with the DMT XXC. The nex t one I get will be the 1200 Atoma as Rookie recommends.

I have the 1k, 3k and 13k now in the SP and I'm happy with them all, no regrets whatsoever. Also just got 5k Chosera (full sized) and I'm loving that too.

Ok Rook, here is my take on new Atoma, now that I have had a chance to use it.

I hesitated on the purchase, the Atoma 140 was $109.00 plus tax so $125.00 is a good sum of money especially when I already own the DMT XC.....luckily I had a Gift Certificate to cover it though.

The Atoma is superior in a couple of ways, it does the job much faster, I mean, really fast. I tested it on full sized stones including the Shapton Glass 500, Chosera 400, and everything in between up to and including the 5k Chosera. I created a grid pattern on the stones with a pencil and went to work lapping and I was really pleased with the results, I was startled at how fast it worked actually. Also, the DMT has a bad stiction problem with some stones, especially the SG, not the case with the Atoma. (Not to mention I can use the plate for re-setting bevels, the Atoma 140 for the EP is something I used very frequently, in fact it is one of the best purchases from Ken I ever made.

So in my opinion, it is freakin awesome, no regrets at all.

The Atoma 1200 is now a must for me.
