This is going to be all about ice carving.

I have recently changed jobs and now work for an ice carving company in Charlotte, NC. Wondering if this is something that interests any one here.

Anybody have experience carving?
Any pictures?

Would love to hear about what you know or have done. I will be posting some pics soon.

Hopefully this thread gets some action!!!

there's this place in my country that they directly translate to chisel. it's called Paete, Laguna (Pah-eh-teh). very well known for their wood carvings. most hotels also hire these guys as ice carvers as well. many times when there are international (mostly asian) competitions, my country always takes the award, as far as i know.

one guy i met from where I used to train is from said place:

If you have any sculpting experience, it should come easily. Chainsaws and Chisels. In my opinion, keep things very simple and bottom weighted.

I ran into this forum somewhat by accident. I'm a professional ice sculptor and I'm willing to answer questions if you have them. I can't always answer quickly, but I subscribed to the thread and I'll do the best I can if you're curious about some aspect of sculpting ice. In the attached image, I'm standing by a large sculpture we did in Alaska in 2009.

First let me start by saying "WELCOME!!!" and thank you for taking the time to come over and share with us. That is an absolutely amazing sculpture, DNA, that is just incredible. If you have any knife related questions we can help, otherwise I'll shut up and listen, this is interesting!

Thank you Shaun and Melampus; I'm sure that I will have some knife questions at some point. I don't use knives much sculpting ice, but we did just make it through the bulk of the pumpkin carving season and for the first time this year, I did a lot of that. I couldn't really use my chainsaws for that :D

Here's a link to an interesting forum where I recently answered a lot of questions about my job as an ice sculptor.

If you want to add to it, great! If you have a question here that I might be able to help with here, then great as well!

Thanks again!
