Hello, all. I've been a member here for about a month and I think I've read every thread relating to EP sharpening at least once. I've learned so much from all of y'all. I sharpen mainly folders (Grip, miniGrip, Sage1, Sage3, Manix2, couple of Kershaws) and my wife's Henckels. I've got an EP Apex and GS 220, 500, 1K, 2K, 4K, 8k. I just ordered a a couple of balsa strops and CrOx paste. I would've gotten the boron paste but CKTG is out of it, so I ordered a GS 16K instead. Twisted logic, but my illness must be fed.
I really don't have much to offer the members here- I am a definite noob and all the knowledge flow is definitely going from y'all to me. I really appreciate the knowledge and experience of the members here. Definitely the best forum experience I've ever had on the internet. Anywho, I guess I have one tidbit I can share with y'all:
Having a magnet under the EP table has really helped me keep the knives stable, helping my bevel consistency tremendously. I had a bunch of old, small obsolete hard drives laying around. I recently decided to destroy them before discarding them, rather than going through the hassle of zeroing out the disks with a program called Eraser. What I did instead was disassemble them and physically destroy the platters. While I was doing that I removed all of the rare earth magnets in them. They are incredibly strong and pretty fun to play around with.
I taped one magnet under the EP table and that did a pretty good job of holding most of the knives in place. The Manix2 is pretty heavy (about 5 ounces) so I added a second magnet. That holds that knife pretty well. It does try to repel the angle cube a little too much and it's a little bit much for all the other knives, so I may break one of the magnets in two and use one and a half magnets.
Cool, I've officially contributed *something* to the forum now, even though it's not much.
Now it's back to sharpening- wife is at a casino tonight, trying to make some cash for whatever she's got in mind. I'm fighting the urge to sharpen the Al Mar Falcon I got for my dad for Christmas and the Bark River Fox River I got for my son for *finally* graduating from college- woot!
