Hi Andrew , I have bought quite a few knives and sharpening stones etc in the States and had them shipped to the UK . Delivery is in my case ,the Midlands , 1/3 weeks . If the parcel is stopped by the customs and most are then it takes 2/3 weeks , in the happy event that the customs don't notice the parcel then it is about a week to ten day's . If the customs delay the knife or whatever then you will get a notice from the PO that a parcel is being held until you pay the customs fee = 20 percent plus an £8 handling fee . That is if your purchase is under £135 ,if not then import duty is payable as well , don't know how much that is .
You get used to it !!!

We're using DHL for most shipments to the UK and it's usually about 4-5 days. They have their own customs people in house so there is almost never a hang up with them now.

I found this link on another site, it should help work out customs duty, VAT and charges from the US to the UK. Just enter the value of the items including shipping and it works it out using the current exchange rate.
