Upgrading my King stones.

Hey mark,
I am new to sharpening with little experience. I own a norton 1k/4k combo and have sharpened some on that. I would like to get a whole new set. Probably a 4 or 5 stone set up. Any opinions on a group of stones that has good feedback, cuts relatively fast, an isn't too hard or too soft.

Hi Tanner,

Good feedback, cuts well and isn't too hard or soft describes the Chosera line very accurately.
Try a nice 3 stone progression like 600, 2K, 5K or 400, 1K, 5K

The 10K stone in nice but really expensive. If you want a higher grit finisher after the 10K I would suggest the Imanishi 10K or you could add a strop instead.

Chocera's are nice, for sure.

Another option would be the following stone's:

Beston 500
Bester 1200
Arashiyama 6000

I prefer the Suehiro Rika in place of the Arashiyama, but the Rika is rather soft.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've been looking into the red brick and the brick of joy as my medium grit stone just do to sheer size. Do y'all have a preference over either one and would going from 500 grit as a bevel setter to 2k too much of a jump?

Going from 500 to 2k is really too big of a jump in my opinion. Could be done, but I sure wouldn't want to regularly.

Ok thank you for your input. I think I'm getting closer to my decision on a set up.

500, 1K is a more manegable jump. You can do 500, 2K but you will need to spend a little more time on the 2K to get out the scratches left by the 500. Otherwise it works fine.

Whatever you do it's a good idea to have a magnifier of some sorts so you can see what you're doing.
