Tsukiji Masamoto Stones

Sun Aug 25, 2013 1:50 pm

Have any of you tried the Tsukiji Masamoto stones?
I have my eye on their #1K bench stone and am curious as to how it compares to the more typical stones mentioned here.

Thanks.

Where are you finding them?

I caught wind of them after watching a few of the YouTube videos of Misao Hirano sharpening his Tsukiji Masamoto knives.

I wonder if the coarse and medium are simply king stones?

Not sure. In one of his interviews he mentions getting them made to his spec in order to control quality. If they are Kings, I would assume/hope they're custom. I already have a few #1K stones in the rotation/testing, otherwise I'd order one.

From the video I watched I now don't think they are kings, kings are a lot more muddy so it could very well be stones made to his specs.

It's a very common practice to have stones OEM'd under private labels.

Didn't realize it but we had a Masamoto 4k at the shop. I used it all day Saturday and it was a very nice stone. Worked equally well on everything from a fujiwara stainless to the PM steel of a blazen.

It easily produces a scary sharp edge on all the steels I used it on and the sharpness was very consistent along with the speed at which the stone cut. It a expensive stone likely made by a larger stone maker but imo worth its cost.
