The kurouchi finish has been creating friction such that it was hard to use this guy on some products.

So I stripped it.

There are some small pits but I love the rustic look of the kurouchi finish, just not the friction the finish was causing.

I used 220 grit sand paper, ~300, ~600, ~1200 grit scotch brite pads. All passes were from the spine to the edge except the last (1200) which I went along the blade but only above the grind.

The patina is two different patterns with yellow mustard but it did not get dark enough so I buried it in some diced onion that I was about to throw out (garnish from last night).

Haven't used it yet, so I can't say if this helped with sticking/wedging, but I really like the look of it.

Just used it tonight to make dinner. Still on the thick side overall, but a marked improvement.

And I love the look, it looks cooler (IMHO)

Funny, I tried to force a patina with vinegar on mine, and it took the kurouchi right off! Still looks rustic, just a different kind of rustic.

Ha

That sounds less labor intensive than what I did.

Mine started inadvertantly. I was trying to thin it out a little and took off some of the KU finish. I thought what the hell, it won't look any worse and sanded the rest off with 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper. Then took 1000/1500/2000 grit to it and it shined up pretty nicely. A little Mother's to finish it off and thats where she sits now. Never did finish thinning it though....I bought a Carter funayuki instead :D
