Damn Red, that's some really nice looking work on the handle and the blade! Lookout handle makers :-). Thanks for detailing your process for everyone.

Great work, Red.
I'd like to try this too. Do you have a link to Taz's instructions for the dowel technique?

I see in some vids that they heat the end of the tang before inserting into the handle which sounds like what you tried at first. Subsequently using epoxy without heat instead.

I don't get why in traditional installations they heat the tang. Heating would expand the metal, on insertion it burns the wood inside the handle. It seems to me that on cooling the metal would shrink and is surrounded by slightly burnt wood that would not creat a very tight fit. Wouldn't it be better to do it cool and allow friction between the tang and handle hold the handle in place?

Edit: nice work by the way

Looks very good! Heat installation works well with the basic softer woods, but I don't like it for normal installations. WoodCraft sells a 1/8" square needle rasp that works great for tag slots; I grind off opposite sides on 1 rasp to give me a narrower slot and use a second one with all of the teeth left on all 4 sides to open up the tang slot. I do them a little oversized and that allows me to adjust the handle so it fits properly and then I Jb Kiwk Weld the handle to the tang and make sure the ends are sealed.

What kind of wood did you use for the handle section? The brass spacer is a nice touch, great job Red !

Wow, that looks really nice. Thanks for sharing it. Maybe someday I'll try my own, but it's still a bit intimidating.
