You may ink the part you want to have thinned with a marker to find out which angle is needed to abrade it, and go on till you almost reach the edge. The different scratch patterns should tell you.
I would start at some 1.5cm from the edge.
I use a strip of coarse sandpaper (beginning with P120 or so) on a stone, making edge trailing strokes.

NORWAY <> 1c: Refer to answer 4a.

2c: You can, but you run the risk of altering the grind to a flat grind.

So if I want to thin the whole bevel of my Artifex I do need a belt grinder since it is then more easy to make a more convex bevel?
A very coarse stone will not do the trick (Bamboo 150-180#)

I have thinned an Artifex 210 on stones. I used a DMT XXC and the Bamboo 150 for the major work. It did a fine job, but was a lot of work. Granted the one I did on my Kalamazoo machine was MUCH faster in getting done.

NORWAY <> No where did I say it could not be done with stones. As Paradox states obviously, it's easier w/a grinder, but stones do the same thing. To convex on flat stones, you basically grind two angles and then roll them together. On a HanHan stone, the whole grind is a roll. These are obviously advanced sharpening techniques that you most likely aren't going to engage...

Sorry for my misunderstanding. But i have understood that reprofiling my Artifex without a belt grinder probably is to much work by hand:)
But I can still practice on thinning the knife behind the edge.
