The Secret To Creating The Perfect Straight Razor Edge

This is a video one of my customers shared with me using various compounds and strops ending with a 3x11" strip of nanocloth over glass with 0.050 micron Polycrystaline diamond. Excellent presentation!

These are available in various sizes here:

In addition I have them available for the WEPS platform and if there is demand, I can also provide them in 3x11" sizes as seen in this video.

The Shapton Pro and Glass 30,000 grit has an abrasive size of .49 micron. Can you skip the sprays and use the Shapton 30K down to the .5 micron stage? That is what I've been doing, and under high magnification that Shaptons are comparable to strops with sprays down to .5 micron.

Yes you can. Each has it's advantages and in fact you can use a 0.5 micron CBN spray ON a 30k stone to give it an extra 'bump' to make it even more effective on abrasion resistant steels. It does have the side effect of increasing the stone slurry abrasion rate too. This allows you to use the CBN as a component of the stone slurry allowing an edge leading and trailing stroke to be used. Alternatively you can also use Diamond film mounted on glass as a super flat alternative too. I have these available in two formulations = regular and heavy duty, and these are particularly effective with abrasion resistant steels.

Interestingly, I have been using the Shaptons with a spritz of the 0.5 CBN with a trailing stroke on my Richmond Addict CPM154, and it works beautifully.

CBN on stones work but for razors, I'm not that fond of it. At least not for edge leading strokes. I only have Swedish razors and they are known for their hard steel. Going edge leading into the hard CBN particles may cause micro chipping, so if I do it, I use trailing strokes only.

Here's a second video my customer did where he introduces a novel technique of very lightly spraying an impregnated nanocloth strop with some deionized water and he feels it improves his results. I'd be very interested to hear of others results using the nanocloth without any 'moisturizing' vs this light refreshing. I've certainly found good results without doing this, but I'm always ready to learn.

Enjoy the Benny Hill sound track and the fish in the background. He uses deionized water that he gets from supplies available in stores that provide deionized water for fish tanks :)

Ken-
What do you think about putting that on a belt for a Viel? Possible results? Charge for belt?

Send me a PM. It is a project I am currently working on :)
