The latest addition to my expense

Tue Jul 24, 2012 11:45 pm

My favorite knife, just got a full new suit! :D This has been a long time coming, I have had this knife almost a year and finally got the exact materials I wanted to dress it up!

The handle is a little stubbier than normal, because I like short handles. I choke way up on this knife, so the handle usually just whacked my forearm. The new wood is heavy enough the balance point did not move.

The sheath is some crazy Redwood and my signature softwood spacer. The handle is premo Stabilized Redwood Burl, Texas Ebony, and a Hard Maple Spacer. The board is a Lone Star Artisans Walnut board--some VERY nice Walnut. The knife, of course, is a 240mm Shigefusa Kitaeji Gyuto.

EAMON <> :o Drop jaw gorgeous! Come on... how could anyone not feel this way.?! "Crazy" redwood for sure! It reminds me of ostrich skin. LOVE the softwood spacers & even moreso how they coordinate saya to grip. ;)

Eamon,

Beautiful work and gorgeous wood.

You're using spacers in lieu of "hollowing" the saya? Are they tapered?

And love the brand, great touch, and the contrast with the wood is an eye catcher.

Thanks for sharing.

Thanks!

Yes they are tapered, in fact, I make them shaped pretty much like the knife they hold.

I am indeed not hollowing out the sheath, so therefore it is not a saya. I don't actually like sayas very much anymore. They are pretty though.

Thanks, Eamon. I made a couple a few years back for someone and did the same thing. I've always wondered why more saya/sheaths didn't employ this construction. Seems much simpler to me and makes much more sense.........
