My nephew is getting married and was thinking of getting them a tojiro bread knife. Is that 'nice enough' as a wedding gift?

I'd be happy, then again, I don't know who its for and what they eat. If you want a nicer bread knife, check out the mac.

Thanks JM. I'll check out the mac. They're Houstonians. All they do is eat. In or out. I asked. Que is his thing but so is bread.

I'll stand up for the Tojiro ITK. It's a quality knife and drew a lot from the Mac Superior. To me, the biggest difference is that the Mac is much more expensive.

I can't fault my Tojiro. Would love one with an 7-8" blade...

I have used my Tojiro for roasts including brisket, so I think it would work well. In fact, the first time I handled a scalloped edge knife I was at a store demo and it was being marketed specifically for BBQ slicing. I think this can be a deceptively flexible knife for many "typical" users.
The nuts here take pride in having edges that can handle roasts with out serrations, they are holding their noses right now.

If all they do is eat you should also consider a suji knife. I'll assume the Texans know how to make a mean brisket

I'd be inclined to cater more to his wife (assuming she will be primarily cooking - you know best
). Both will benefit.
Is she new to J-Knives?
If so perhaps a stainless Santoku with a western handle and a ceramic rod w/sheath...

If we're playing up the Texas is big angle, you could always get them a CCK Big Rhino. That's good for chopping BBQ or something, I'm sure. I've hacked up a shoulder with two cleavers at once before. It's a workout and loads of fun!
If someone tries to assign someone a santoku as a wedding gift based on gender again, I'm going to scream. When you develop good knife skills and habits, gyuto vs santoku are personal choices. If someone isn't going to develop good knife skills or is scared of longer knives, he or she shouldn't be using a high caliber Japanese chef knife *or* santoku as an all purpose knife.
