Tanaka Sekiso Gyuto Rehandle

Sat Jul 06, 2013 1:12 am

Well, I rehandled my Tanaka Sekiso 240mm gyuto a while back with Giraffe bone. Handle felt good, but was way too heavy. The handle itself weighed around 100gr!! It stuck into the cutting board almost every cut. The extra weight made it cut even more effortlessly, but the sticking was annoying! So today I got in some Mammoth Tooth to play with and I wanted to do a new, lighter handle for the Tanaka. Out came the good ole box of wood and I spent way too much time deciding, consulting colors with my mom, etc. I wanted something blue in it like usual. So we decided on the Black/White M3 Lava, Mammoth Tooth spacer and Blue Box Elder Burl.

Never worked Mammoth Tooth before, so I tried to cut a piece off. Sparks flex from the bandsaw blade and I only made a dent on the tooth, so I got out the hacksaw, got halfway thru and it snapped. I had a piece big enough, so I took the scrap and tried to drill it. Shattered. Man, this stuff is a PITA!!! So I did some research and ended up epoxying the tooth to the Box Elder Burl and then drilling with very light pressure. It made dust rather than chips/curls when drilled. It's like working stone.

So I got it glued and blocked out and shaped. Had to go slow and I kept putting a layer of thin super glue on it as I worked it to fill any cracks that got exposed. It was a little slower going filling the cracks (couldn't find my Activator to make it cure faster), but I got it done tonight!!

Quick handle pics. First is off of the buffer, 2nd and 3rd are after a coat of Tung Oil. Gotta get better pics tomorrow

Found a way to make it a bit more interesting :)

Water with a little Ferric Chloride added to it, between 45 seconds and 1 min to etch. I actually redid it, too. I found some of my finger prints on it :)
