I know the Damascus jsut became available and they are in slightly different price catagories but I'm, hoping to get some input on folks thoughts on these two knives in terms of size, shape, and performance.

Well, one is stainless (Richmond) and the Tanaka is Carbon. I have the Tanaka 240mm and love it. It has a nice convex grind to it and slices very well. Just the right size for me! Can't really comment about the Richmond Damascus, but they look pretty dang nice!

Yeah I'm sold on the Tanaka but the new damascus looks damn nice. Just hoping someone had a hands on.

Okay, I've had hands on 1 Tanaka damascus, so here's my analysis (from memory)
The Richmond weighs slightly more, which makes it a slightly better cutter. Both are thin behind the edge, but Tanaka is slightly thinner overall. Grind on Richmond is convex, and very nice. The steel holds a good edge for stainless, takes a really fine edge, and has good toughness for such a thin edge.

Talked with Mark today and am going to give the Damascus a try once the get in from being handled. I'm not a big Damascus fan normally but this blade looks really nice. Figured I could always go back and get a Tanaka.
