You had recommended the Takamura Migaki R-2 Petty 150mm

Is the Richmond Aogami Super Laser Petty 150mm $45 better?

The difference between them will really be in the steel. R-2/SG2 steel is a powdered steel with very fine grain structure and wear resistance.

Aogami super, AS for short is a carbon steel with high wear resistance.

The richmond knife will be easier and faster to sharpen, but the Takamura will hold the edge for a little longer.

It comes down to you either want a western handle or a japanese wa handle.

So flip a coin, you can't go wrong with either of these choices.

Guys - what do you think of the differences in the shapes? The Richmond is thicker and has a higher (taller) profile and is slightly heavier. All things being equal (which of course they never are) do you see any pros or cons?

CK - I'd take the Richmond Laser AS Petty every time, primarily because of the shape and blade height. I find tall Petty's more useful as a mini Gyuto than short, utility style Petty's. Just my preference. The Takemura is really nice, just too short for me.

Dumb question but...

I noticed in one the responses in this thread...
"R-2/SG2 steel is a powdered steel with very fine grain structure"

Are R-2 and SG2 the same thing? Maybe different but similar?
