MICHIEL <> So if I understand you correctly, you use the .3 alox on balsa? Then progress to a hanging leather finish strop, or do you bridge with a dry leather bench strop?

Regarding the stones... do you sharpen on an 8k then progress to a 15k, or were you saying one or the other? Do you only use edge trailing strokes, or do you lead in, as well? On knives, I lead in & trail till i generate a burr, then shift to trailing only. On a fine razor, I wonder...

Furthermore, my kitchen knife stone kit ends with a Kityama. I have never needed to refine any further, and sometimes even its too much. So since I have an 8k, what would you suggest as a 15k?

I like to give all my business to Mark so where does that leave me... Nubatama Bamboo, Shapton, natural (and if so, which)?

0.3µ on balsa, then on the hanging strop. you can use the paste on leather too if you just prefer the feel of leather.

I hone up to 8k, then do 20 laps on the 15k. Only use edge leading strokes. NEVER build a burr on a razor. Alternate strokes to avoid a burr.

Look at my article: http://belgiansharpening.wordpress.com/ ... periority/

For naturals, Coticules are insanely popular, but getting more and more pricey. A lot of info out there about honing on coticules.
If I finish on a natural it's a coticule or a Nakayama Nasiji.

MICHIEL <> Thank you kindly for your input. :)

I read your blog which leaves me with the Shapton Pro 15k.

Last question: what I know an edge-leading stroke to be is quite simply "pushing" the cutting edge into the stone; conversely, an edge-trailing stroke is pulling the edge across the stone. I am simply clarifying this vernacular as I wouldn't have thought to only utilize laps with the cutting edge into the stone.

Is this what you are suggesting? I only lead the edge into the stone for razors?

I'll trust you, but just making sure...

MICHIEL <> So Mark no longer carries Alumina Oxide gel in .3 micron. What would you suggest in its place (that he carries)?

0.5 CrO is good. You can still get the AlOx from Ken Schwartz directly. I know he has some.

That's what I meant with edge leading.
