Now that I'm getting a handle on stropping(it really is something!)I was wondering about the balsa block. How does one know when it's time to sand it clean and start over? What grit papaer should I use? Do you have to clean the residue from it periodically. Us OCD control freaks want to know?

I usually use my balsa until it's black with metal and slick before I consider sanding it. Use rough sandpaper (less than 200 grit) to quickly remove the paste (use a mask if you're using an electric sander). That's how I've done it but I've only done it a couple times.

Thanks Mark. I haven't had the kit that long but have been using it daily trying to learn the right way to do the stroping. Since I've been practicing with about 20+ different knives it has gotten a lot of use.
