We have a massive amount of Edge Pro products so we figured it would be good to have a whole section on how to use the machine and what to use on it.

Strop choices for the Edgepro

Sat Feb 15, 2014 11:17 am

What are you guys using for a strop set up on the Edgepro? Are you stropping freehand after sharpening with the edge pro? Or are you using the Edgepro to strop?

Just curios to see what everyone's setup is, what types of strops and or compounds everyone is using and having success with?

I'm currently just finishing on a 8k Shapton glass stone. So I'm wondering what you guys think would be a good progression after that?

Thanks

Try free handing on horse butt with no compound. It works really well. No muss no fuss.

I have the Shapton stones and finish with the 8k.i get almost a mirror polish but not quite. I have the white and green strop man dimond compounds. And while they work great for sharpness they seem to scrach up the finish that I worked so hard to get. Even just the bare lether. bovine verity. What should I be using to get that perfict mirror shine that I've been chasing?

After the 8K Shapton the EP 6K polishing tape (~16K in Shapton grit) mounted on a glass blank will give you a mirror in no time.

I second this, even using the 3K tapes gives me a pretty high shine almost mirror like. And they are cheap if you end up not liking them.

After the stones, i usually strop with a 10k, then I use a Roo w 1 micron spray. I also have leather strop that I use free-hand for maintenance between the stones.

I finish with an 8k shapton glass and follow with the Richmond strop kit combo http://www.chefknivestogo.com/haamstkit.html and amazes each and every time just as it did today. I was a recent strop convert and now a huge fan. Strangely though my 3pc kit came with 1 micron spray rather than the .25 currently being offered. That jump was perfect from an 8k to a 16k grit.

I just cut one out of Balsa the same size as the aluminumum blanks. 1/4" thick*1". Added some of the DMT Paste and it's good to go. Seems ok at first glance, but haven't used it enough to Judge yet.
