Never from the surf, but living in South Florida as a youth - fishing is a way of life... it used to be, at least. I worked professionally on charter boats as a mate for many summers in the Florida Keys all the way down to the Dry Tortugas. I worked a lot in the Bahamian Islands, as well. Usually ran over to Bimini, then up to the "West End" of Grand Bahama Island, then up & around to Walker's on the top, then flank back down and around the Abocos. I'd have to scan photos to get the good stuff, but I have a couple recent on this hard drive. Actually, the last one is not recent. I was 13 years-old in the photo; 6'1" @180# for scale. That Cubera weighed 66#, and is still, 25 years later, the IGFA World Record in the 16# class.

I go surf casting a few times a year up around the Mass/NH border when the striped bass are 'running'. No pics and usually no luck except for the occasional too small to keep
Im going to try to get out there this weekend though...hopefully pics coming soon!

I lived less than 50 yards from Long Island sound for most of my life ... up until about 3 years ago that is. Got tired of hurricane flooding and now I'm safely 200ft above sea level.
Sadly, I desperately miss being able to go for morning walks on the beach however, and being able to fish, clam, sail or kayak whenever I felt like it, without having to get in the car.
Anyway, the primary fish I used to catch on the north shore of long island were snappers and striped bass ... and on rare occasions, I spear fished on the south shore for flounder and black fish.
