Slurry Stone

Sat Oct 26, 2013 6:32 am

I need a slurry stone for an unknown hard domestic natural. I love the stone and use it for my razors. I am thinking some slurry would only help....I am looking at the mini DMT's, but don't know whether to get the coarse or fine.

The stone is approx 8k, which should I use....does it matter?

"unknown hard domestic natural" - USA domestic? A bit more detail please. If in doubt cutting off a small piece of it to use as a tomonagura would work just fine

I use the DMT that Mark sells on this site, its a blue one, about 325 ish grit I think on many of my sharpening stones. I really like it but I sharpen knives, not razors.

Let me expand on that a little.

If I use a Meara JNat to finish a knife and use a Meara slurry stone, I feel the resulting edge is a little more refined and less toothy than if I use the DMT slurry plate to make slurry. For kitchen knives, I prefer a little more tooth so love the DMT on the Meara. If I where to be sharpening a razor, I am thinking the opposite would be true.

The end result is.... I am thinking if you don't want to cut a chunk of your natural, that using a high grit DMT plate would be better than a low grit one.

I should ask how firmly the Diamonds are bonded to the plates , I've never used DMT's stuff , but im always concerned with a random diamond coming lose and contaminating the slurry , hence why I rarely if ever use my Atomas to generate a slurry. Even though they are broken in. Epecially when playing with the finer end of the spectrum , it only takes one stray diamond to fook a 30k shapton finish...
