Hey all,

Just completed my first straight razor shave. Used a Robeson Suredge I got pretty cheap on eBay. Had to get a blade from my hometown's glory days. Finished it on my Arashiyama 6k and chromium oxide on leather. I know it's not an ideal finishing stone, but it's what I have for now. Have to say was pretty impressive for my first try both shaving and honing. Not the closest I've ever shaved, but damn satisfying and no cuts or bad burn. Brush was a cheap pure badger from amazon, with Col Conk bay rum soap. Wasn't sure I'd stick with it, so I figured going for a really cheap entry was probably the idea. Have to say I enjoyed both. Beats my hand and pro gel.

Anybody used a Robeson, or maybe a Geneva? I like my upstate NY.

+1 on the hometown thing! While I'm originally from TX, I live 15 minutes from Worcester now...I've been watching/buying Worcester and Torrey razors. I am new to the game as well but have been looking to try a genco for some time now.

Stick with the straights! If you enjoyed your first, they just better from there :) Its only been a couple months for me but I can't imagine going back to a cartridge....ever!

Can't help you much with the honing...some of my razors I can hone well, some I just can't get a decent bevel on. My finisher is a 10k nubatama I bought on the classifieds here (not an ideal finisher by any means) followed by crox on balsa then bare horsehide.

Anyway, enjoy the shaves, enjoy the ritual, enjoy the learning curve :)

Chris

Thanks for the encouragement. I really enjoyed it, was surprised I didnt cut myself or get awful burn the first time. Also was surprised by the competence of the razor off the 6k. I was thinking 10k Imanishi for my next, although it seems some say that isnt enough either. Not sure what I will do, but I do think the straight razors are here to stay. Already finding myself watching several more razors on eBay. Combine that with my determination to own every gyuto anybody has ever said a good word about, and my wallet's future is looking grim.
