"I thought it was obvious. I the good old days -- just a few years ago -- the Hiromotos had a very fat clad, and the free core at the left side was very, very small. After some sharpening without thinning that left side I incorporated a little clad part into the edge. A very curious, persistent burr was the result."

Can't hold it against me for fishing for something more salacious. :D

That is a good story, and something to be aware of I guess. I would not have thought the clad would get anywhere near the cutting edge unless I tried a really asymmetric bevel or something, but I recently noticed how thin the hagane can be, and I can now see how that might occur.
