We have a massive amount of Edge Pro products so we figured it would be good to have a whole section on how to use the machine and what to use on it.

Hi Mark - I have a couple of ZDP-189 knives (Miyabi and Spyderco) that I have been sharpening with a Sharpmaker at 15 degrees and would like to reduce the Miyabi to it's original 12 degrees. Is the glass Shapton 220 adequate for this or do I need to bite the bullet and pick up the 140 diamond plate? I also thought that a 2/1 reduction in stone grit was ideal. Is the progression from 1000 to 4000 in the Essential set workable or do I need to get the 2000? Do I also need to get the DMT 120 plate to resurface the shaptons immediately or can that wait awhile? I'm attempting to keep the cost as reasonable as possible.

The 220 glass stone will work fine for the steel you're sharpening and it's about half the price of the plate. It will take a little longer to do but it should be no problem.

I sharpened my Miyabi to 12 degrees with original EP stones without any issue. I could never understand claims that ZDP189 is hard to sharpen...

I'm with you.
Bought a DragonFly in ZDP189 and my normal stones made quick work of it.
Disclaimer: It's for work so it went to 21dps and only to 600 grit.

My Spyderco Stretch is in ZDP 189. While fairly hard, it is not in the same class as the Spydercos made from S110V or K390. Sharpening was consistent and fairly fast with the Aluminum Oxide Edge Pro stones. I used the Stretch in the test at the end of the thread on the Improved method of using the Edge Pro. It only took one very well placed stroke to bring it back to hair shaving sharp after several weeks of use. This steel is growing on my. It has been easy to sharpen, takes and holds a edge way better than S30V, S35V and similar steels, and clean looking too.

"Raymond: This steel is growing on my."
Same for me, I really like my Miyabi 7000MCD. The edge really lasts long and being stainless I do not need to wash it immediately.
