Not sure if this has been mentioned, but Shapton does not use the JIS grit rating system. Shaptons 500 is listed at approx 600 grit.

The Chocera 400 is listed is list right at 600 grit. What it is listed as means little it's the performance that matters and both of those stones perform very well.

That's what I thought about steel type, that performance mAtters most. But people seem to go ape sh*t over the flavor of the week, whether it be R2 or SLD or the likes.
So maybe people would like to know whether the abrasives are actually sized to what they are marketed at. If I was looking for a 500 grit stone, but it acted more like a 6-700. I would definately like to know.

Who really knows what a 500 grit acts like. I have yet to find any two stones rated the same that act the same. The numbers just get you in the ball park, it's personal preference from there.

Mowgs, thank you for bringing that up. I understood that there was some variation among manufacturers on the subject of grit ratings, but I was not aware that Shapton didn't use the JIS system. I would also presume that the Shapton Pro 1k may not have precisely the same particle size as the Glass 1k even though the stones have the same grit rating and are made by the same manufacturer. This kind of gets to what Jeff was saying about grit ratings just getting you in the ballpark. But it's a point worth remembering nonetheless.
And Melampus, thank you for posting that here for easy access. It looks like the Chosera 400 is also closer to a JIS 500 grit stone. Stones are funny like that. It's also amusing how the Arashiyama 6k is marketed as the Takenoko 8k, and the Ice Bear 10k is thought to be the same stone as the Kitayama 8k. The numbers can play tricks on you if you take them too seriously.
