Sharpening Cheap Knife

Sat Apr 06, 2013 12:03 am

This was my first attempt at a cheap knife. At work we wanted a knife to cut blocks of cheese, summer sausage etc. So I went to Foodlion and bought a cheap 4.5" Home 360 brand knife. From the factory of course it wouldn't shave hair, barely cut paper, so I decided to sharpen. Used Atoma 400 to start with and did the sharpie thing, made sure I was getting to the edge and raised a burr finished with the Atoma 1200. Angle was at 22 deg, since it was cheap steel. I still cant get it to shave hair, and still barely cuts paper. Has anyone else had this with cheap knives?

Try an even less acute angle, but don't expect miracles. It is a cheap knife for a reason and spending a great deal of effort trying to make something of it will only discourage you from sharpening.Try stropping it on a piece of paper.
