Sharpening Background Noise

Sun May 12, 2013 3:27 pm

I was sharpening some knives yesterday and had Pandora on in the background . . . Freebird was playing and I found myself being drawn into the music while sharpening. Before I knew it I was moving the knife to the beat of the music . . .

When I realized this I thought it would be interesting to hear what others have going on in the background while sharpening. If I don't have music I will have a football game or a MotoGP race going in the background. The trouble with having something to watch (as opposed to listening to music) I take my eyes off sharpening or miss some of the show.

What do you do when sharpening??

Music is nice but pure silence is what I like.

As for the music I go a little outside my norm and prefer techno or classical, I know, kinda odd mix.

If you listen to music or TV while sharpening good knives, you probably won't hear clearly what the stone is doing.

"Everybody must get stoned", Rolling stones ...

Seriously though, I really enjoy listening to the stones themselves and the sound they make abrading the metal. I like to involve my senses when sharpening, although I do avoid tasting the stones (so far). I won't 'out' you, but there are some 'stone lickers' out there :)

Silence as well. The gf hates it and i cant be around her when I have a sharpening session cause it's like "nails on a chalkboard"

I sharpen in silence. The sound of the stone changes when you are below or on the edge so I use this a little when I first start to find the edge angle.

I do both. I have headphones on when doing belt sander work and most of the time music is blasting through it :D

While working on stones I have music in the background. Then again, I always have music playing.

BB <> I do nothing to prep for sharpening. Meaning, if there is music on, there is music on. If there is banter & chatter, there is banter & chatter. If there is a hurricane blowing outside, the hurricane blows it's demonic howl. Because when I am sharpening, I'm focused intently on what I'm doing, and I cant hear a phucking thing outside of said focus.
