Maybe someone in the know can give a brief "Shapton for Dummies" Pro vs. Glass explanation? I have been trying to research it and I'm going into overload I think.

For more detail I'm keen to get a nice progression set of 4 or 5 stones for my Edge Pro. General purpose use, Japanese & western kitchen knives along with some EDC folders. Tojiro, Wustof, Henkel, Benchmade, Kershaw, Gerber, Buck etc. What stones? 4 vs. 5? Thoughts?

Thanks!

My view on Pro stones: http://belgiansharpening.wordpress.com/ ... periority/

Glass stones: http://belgiansharpening.wordpress.com/ ... -edge-pro/

For more info, search the forum. the question has popped up a few times.

For those knives, and the steel they use, I would suggest Pro stones.

Harrelson Stanley (head of Shapton USA) recommends the Glass stones for most users. They're the new technology and they cut a wider variety of steels better than the pros.

4 stones is probably enough.

Pro: 320, 1k, 2k, 5k
Glass: 320, 1k, 2k, 6k

Strop afterwards with substrate and compound of choice and you're good to go.

Thanks for the feedback!

Mark, any idea when you'll have more of the 1K, 2K, and 6K glass?

Thanks again!

I haven't used an edge pro yet(found a great deal on a used one), but starting to look at stones. would the narrow progression from 1k to 2k leave any toothiness on the edge?

thanks Michiel for the suggestion for progression. I broke down and got the 320,1k,2k,6k gs set, and wow these things cut fast. I had been happy with my hand sharpening(easy to shave @1k), thought an edge pro would be 'fun'.... now I feel i need to practice more freehand.
