Shapton GS 4000 (loading up quickly)

Sat Jan 04, 2014 6:00 pm

I am having trouble with my Shapton GS 4000 stone loading up, I think. I have progressed from the Shapton GS 320, 1000, to the 4000. The edges all look good and will shave hair. Once I get to the GS 4000 it seems to load up quickly. Black or grayish marks/smears similar to what I would get on ceramic sharpening rods. A little scrubbing with the 140 diamond plate and it is clean again.

Is this normal? What am I doing wrong? Any suggestions?

As a side note I am VERY impressed with the CKTG 6 piece Starter Set!

Thanks!

You might just need to splash some more water on it. Splash and go stones don't need soaking, but you still want some standing water on it.

Also add a dash of dish washing liquid, it helps.

Rinse after every pass or two...it's normal.

:)

Just because your getting marks on it doesn't mean it's loading up. If you have a hard time rinsing those marks and it's not cutting well then it's loading. A few passes with your flattening plate will solve that problem when it happens.

Got it. I will give the dish soap a try.

Thank you for the replies!

I am very new to sharpening. In fact, I just sharpened for the second time today. Mostly I learn by reading this forum. I have Shapton GS stones and the instructions say do not wash them with soap or detergent. It would seem that by putting soap on them as suggested it would be in effect washing them with soap. Will this method not eventually harm the stones?

I have some questions related to my second sharpening experience but I'll post those separately.

Use a liquid soap. Rinse off well, it will not hurt the stones .

I agree. The 4K cuts more slowly than the lower grit stones of course and sometimes this is mistaken for the stone loading. Also, black streaks are normal.

Not that it matters but Shapton has a whole big list of do's and dont's and one of the dont's is not to use soapy water. I tend to ignore the advice but I thought I would put it out there.
