Shapton Glass Stones. Is this a good set?

Mon Sep 09, 2013 7:33 pm

Received my order so fast, thanks, John

Thinking to upgrade basic set to Shapton glass stones, does the following line-up look credible to get to a hand strop? Kitchen knives only, so far nothing exotic, German, Shun, etc.

Have the Atoma 140, looking to add

GS 320, 1k,4k,8k,

I don’t really know about the strop, just something I would like to learn to do.

Thanks again, John

Hi John,

Yes that set is perfectly fine for kitchen knives.

If you want to try a strop try the horse butt. It works well and doesn't need any compound to work.

Just do a few edge trailing passes at the same angle as you sharpen and it will improve your edge. You can also use the strop in place of a honing rod. It works well for quick touch ups and it's very gentle on your edges.

Id be adding a 2k to that progression before a strop.

Comments!, you guys are great, Thanks.

Assuming 4 stones are my limit for the moment, would you put in the 2k now and put off the 8k and get that later with a strop?

Based on the knives you listed I'd get the 2k now instead of the 8k. When you get some different knives that can benefit from the 8k then revisit it.

+1
I rarely go above 4k on the type knives you listed and most of the time not above 2k. 8k is not going to give you much if anything until you get into some better steels.
