I ordered a knife that costs $59.95.
As I went through the ordering process, where I put in my payment info the "total" shown was $59.95.
The price was $59.95; The amount of shipping shown was zero. The "total" shown was $59.95.
I decided, "O.K. - it looks like they are being reasonable and rounding up by 5 cents to give me the $60.00 minimum. That's nice – I think I'll place the order."
I clicked the "Place Order" button and Presto! A shipping charge of $4.95 suddenly appeared, where the sum of $0.00 had been shown.
The "total" was now no longer $59.95, but a higher amount that I could only see by pressing the "Place Order" button. Not showing the shipping charge before you order seems intended to mislead customers; when the total is 5 cents short of $60.00, it certainly looks intentionally misleading.
I may return it, but I lose again with the 10% restocking fee.
Be assured, this is my last order from you folks,
John

Seriously, do you guys think we're tricking people to rip off you guys for $4.95?

There is an "apply" button right on the page that calculates the shipping charge. Once you hit apply it calculates any shipping charge....

Not for nothing, but doesn't it show you the shipping before you finalize payment on any order? As illustrated in the pic you posted Mark?

Bummer.
I am not affiliated with CKTG but I am sorry you are miffed. I hope you enjoy the knife. I'm sorry to hear you would let such a seemingly small thing cut you off from the great knives offered here on the site. Personally I have never had an issue, every knife or product I have ordered came packed better than I would have expected, some knives even came with blade covers on them at no additional charge, which was nice. I have had one knife arrive with the ferrule detached, but the knife had been used prior for a video so I can't blame anyone for it as it wasn't a new knife. Mark and Sue have handled the one return I made with great poise and understanding. I seriously doubt they would be trying to rip you off on postage, it wouldn't be them who profit anyway, but USPS or UPS. Honestly at the cost of shipping for some of my own personal orders, I am amazed it was free at all as it had to be around the $50 range even with a discount for online shipping.

As I put forward at the start, I hope you get great usage out of your new knife and I hope after you do get it you will realize that $4.95 may not have been such a big extra investment after all. For the future, if there becomes one, I would recommend padding the cart with the Richmond plating spoons or a few paperboard knife covers. The spoons are awesome ITK and the knife covers are like $0.39 and an easy way to push up the total to $60. (Sorry if I gave away everyone's free shipping secret!! haha)

I wanted a bottle of Co paste that was $10. I bought a stone too so I wouldn't have to pay the shipping on the paste.

I know it's difficult when customers first place an order on a new site. I called him and talked about the cart and he didn't notice the apply button and assumed he would get another page before the order was submitted. I refunded him on the 4.95.

I'll try and tweak the cart layout to account for this in the re-design.

The apply button should be right beside the shipping method, then it wouldn't get missed.

That's great customer service Mark!

I know on my first order with you, I never hit the apply button and I ended up paying shipping. I ordered 1 knife for $99 and paid 4.95 shipping. I chalked it up as my fault. All my other orders I have made sure to hit the apply button and I've never had a problem. I certainly don't look at it as a "Gotcha" I look at it as I should have paid better attention to the check out. It would be hard pressed for someone to believe your ripping them off on shipping(it's not like your really making any money on that.
