This is a Suji that I recently made a handle and saya for. The handle is snakewood with a desert ironwood ferrule with brass and ebony spacers. The saya is cocobolo with a basswood insert and brass pin.
Thanks for looking.

CARTER <> I dig the taper you employ on the Wa.

That's really sweet - how is the snakewood for working?

Carter - that's really nice work and a nice design. If you make these for others and sell them, consider asking Mark if you can have a vendor sub forum in the Knife and Handle Makers area. You can show off your work there and provide info on you and your services.

Nice. I really like the use of brass.

Thanks for the comments. I included more taper for the suji than I do for a typical gyuto, it feels right for slicing and fits the thin profile of the blade better.
Snakewood can be difficult; it is very hard, dense and oily. I recently split a 1"x1 1//2" block with a 1/8" drill bit....you need to drill slowly with a very sharp bit and back the bit out frequently and watch heat buildup. It is also difficult to sand, I use 60 grit on a 12" disc sander for the initial shaping and the paper has to be fresh. The brass works well, it is the softest part of this handle. I use West epoxy and scuff all the surfaces and wipe with acetone and alcohol....I still experienced several joint failures between the brass and ebony and with the snakewood. These hard oily tropical woods are beautiful, but they can try your patience.
More to come soon.

I could not agree more, that is incredibly beautiful. I have always been a big fan of Cocobolo wood.
Keep up the stunning work and please let us know if you ever decide to accept custom orders.
Best of luck

I am building 3 handles identical to the one in the picture above, except the snakewood is replaced with cocobolo, the saya is also cocobolo. I am sending one of the knives, a Goko Damascus (not the hammered finish) 240mm Gyuto http://www.chefknivestogo.com/goko.html
, to Mark to sell. I have not mounted the other 2 handles yet but was going to install them on Goko's, a 210mm Gyuto and a 240mm Sujihiki. If you are interested in one of those or a handle for a different knife, please let me know by PM.
