I believe the Fujiwara FKM steel is AUS-8 or AUS-8A (most likely). One nice aspect of the FKM implementation is the lower HRC rating should make them a bit more forgiving than knives made from harder, more brittle steel. So which steel is better depends on the characteristics that are better for you and your intended use.

I believe the Fujiwara stainless steel is AUS8A. This is what's in the wa-Artifex. The usual heat treat caveats apply, but if the two steels are well heat treated by craftsmen who are good at what they do, 19c27 should perform far better. I had a Fujiwara fkm and while it took a nice edge it did not last all that long. It's rated I believe at 57-58 rockwell, so it is not going to take super high refinement. Probably best between 2-4k.

I haven't had the Goko 19c27 long enough to know for sure on edge retention, but I've used it quite a bit, and took it to a high grit natural finish and it is still performing at just about peak. It's rated at 60, and I wouldn't be shocked if it were higher based on its sharpening characteristics compared to others I have sharpened.

The Fujiwara is a good knife, which likely makes the wa Artifex a good knife. I'm of the opinion that the Goko is in another league of quality despite its price. It has a not-so-good handle and some horizontal scratches on the blade (yes the regular Damascus, not the hammered), and was just introduced, all of which contribute to its price I'm guessing. Performance wise, I'd say it's more $200 knife than $100. I'm still hoping someone with experience with the Kikuichi Swedish Damascus can use one and share their opinion.

LOL! I saw Richmond and was thinking of the yo handled Artifex knives with AEB-L not the knife that's in the freaking thread title... *derp* stupid Munky... yes, the wa handled Artifex uses the exact same steel as the Fujiwara FKM knives. So the 19C27 should pounce all over it in terms of quality. I apologize for my confusion. ;)

I own this knife and I'm a big fan of the value for the money. I don't own any actual high end knives and so I'm the wrong person to ask to compare it to anything really pricey, but it's got nice fit and finish for the money, came OOTB sharp, handles like a smaller knife, the handle itself is really nice at this price point and it's a good all around performer that looks nice.

i own much "nicer" knives, but i wouldn't mind a stainless workhorse/play around with knife; i'm also starting to really like wa handles.
