Razor recommendation

Sun Apr 07, 2013 5:58 pm

I would like to try shaving with a straight razor. I have been using a brush and soaps, but would like to go the full route. I have a fairly tough beard and sensitive skin. I am very proficient at sharpening. Knives anyway. I would like to try the one from here, but it's out o stock. I'd be willing to wait on it if it will be back in a fairly reasonable amount of time, if this razor is one that would suit my needs. Any help or suggestions are welcome.

Hello Red.

is it a kamasori your looking for to buy or a regular straight razor. i would recomend trying a normal straight to start with. the honing of a razor in not like sharpening a knife i suggest you look on a few videos before honing yourself. i would start with getting a sheap razor around 40 to 60$ shave ready, but make sure you get one that has minimal honewear and a edge that isnt frawn. and a good blade size around 5/8 to 6/8.

Yup that's what I'd do as well. Plenty of choices.

RED <> Thick beard/sensitive skin = full wedge in my experience. Hollow grinds get too close for my thick beard/sensitive skin leaving bright red razor burn. I have no way near the experience of these two, but I have used both grinds honed by the same competent hand and it's night & day.

I have sensitive skin and a stiffer grind was easier for me in the beginning as well. I do think a 1/4 grind is the easiest to learn on. It's rather stiff, but much easier to hone than a wedge.

Look at Hellberg, for nice 1/4 grinds.

Thanks, I'll look for 1/4 ground.

I'm having trouble finding a 1/4 ground razor. I have found a new 1/2 grind. Everything I have found vintage and "shave ready" is either full ground, or not advertised as anything. Any suggestions as to where to look? Maybe one of you would have one you'd like to sell?

I just happen to stumble upon these things. I know they aren't easy to find.

I like half hollow as well, but it's horses for courses.
