We have a massive amount of Edge Pro products so we figured it would be good to have a whole section on how to use the machine and what to use on it.

Question About Stop Collar Method, Please

Fri Jun 21, 2013 7:30 pm

I'm beginning to wonder if the stop collar/Angle Cube method works with all stones. MR said to initially set machine with the last stone to be used.

I set it using the Edge Pro polishing tape, which is really so thin it's not like it's really a stone at all. It just doesn't seem like it would work, but I'm new at this.

Are the tapes used in the same manner as the regular stones?

Thanks for any help.

Ray

Hi Ray,
I theorize that the reasoning behind setting the EP/stop collar using the finest stone in your chosen sequence is the following:

Your finest stone (say 4K Shapton GS for example in my case) will probably be your slowest wearing stone. It will require fewer and more gentle flattenings and thus retain it's thickness the longest (unless it's a soft stone).

If I'm trying to match an existing bevel on the knife, I use my 4K Shapton so it has the smallest impact on the knife edge while I test angles wearing away the Sharpie marker off the edge. Once I find the best angle, I can either note the location on the EP vertical rod or use my Angle Cube to precisely measure the angle.

If I'm trying to go for a specific angle, I'll use my 4K stone and Angle Cube to set the EP at that angle.

I then pop the 4K stone out of the holder and set the stop collar UNDER the EP Apex plastic mount w/thumbscrew to the thickness of the 4K stone (in my case).

If I need to use this same setup for the same knife in the future, I can just use the 4K in the holder, set the angle w/my Angle Cube and the set the stop collar again using the 4K as my baseline.

Once you're all set and the stop collar is in place, then, using your first (coarsest) stone in your chosen sequence, loosen the EP thumbscrew and lower it to the width of this stone sandwiched between the stop collar & the plastic mount.

Do the same for your sharpening sequence, including the EP tapes. I assume the EP tapes are mounted to some kind of holder, which, while thin, should work the same way as your stones on the stop collar. Your gap will just be must smaller between the plastic mount w/thumbscrew and the stop collar. It should work great.

I do believe MadRookie likes to lift the EP angle ever so slightly after setting on top of his finest stone/tapes/strop for his final polishing/stropping steps.

To be clear, I'm talking about the EP Apex here and not the Pro model, which MR uses.

MR and others keep logs for the settings on each knife. I have begun to do this as well.

If you have an Angle Cube, then even if your high grit stone does lose thickness over time, you can check the angle each time you sharpen and compensate for wear.

MR - you have no idea how good that post makes me feel. If one of the world's foremost experts on the Edge Pro has nothing to add, I must really be "getting it". Thanks for all your tips that have and continue to contribute to my learning experience with this product.

SteveG:

Thank you for the compliment - however you have looked, tried, learned & adjusted accordingly - that speaks good.

Well done there.

PS: The shitty part is that one "accidentally" finds new "tricks" every so often....adapt is the word....

Stay sharp.

Sincerely.

MadRookie.
