Preventing Mud From Staining Wooden Handles

Thu Apr 10, 2014 3:49 am

Hi guys,

I don't know if this question has been addressed before, so forgive me if it has.

While sharpening how do you keep mud from the stone from mucking up unfinished wooden handles? I'm talking specifically about the CCK 1303 cleaver. I touch it up on the green brick, and every time mud from the stone finds its way onto the handle and gunks it up. I keep the handle treated with mineral oil and just wash and dry it after this happens. But is there a way to keep it from happening in the first place? I was thinking of wrapping the handle in a layer of masking tape. I just don't want to wrap it in something slippery that is going to make sharpening dangerous.

Any tips are appreciated!

I concur with your thinking, painters tape is a viable solution.

Just use plastic wrap. If it is to slippery hold it with a towel (paper or cloth).

This.....with any knife that has a porous handle that I don't want stained, this is what I do. I've used tin foil, a plastic bag, plastic wrap....they all work.

I have rarely ever got any swarf on my handles, but when I had I just cleaned it off with steel wool.

Can't take the chance it won't come off when I'm sharpening a knife that is not my own though.

Perfect, thank you guys. I will try the plastic wrap + paper towel approach.

I have never even thought of this as a potential problem. Thanks for enlightening me before I made a irreversible mistake ;)

It happens more with the barely treated Ho wood handles but can happen to the best of them. Keeping your handles treated helps a bunch.

Yeah, handles that use very dense wood (ebony/rosewood/etc.) or stabilized wood don't get dirty nearly as easily as ho wood or some of the other really porous woods.
